Victoria to review laws regarding same-sex adoption

Spread the love

The Victorian Government recently announced the commencement of its review to permit adoption of children by same-sex couples in Victoria.  Under current Victorian legislation the adoption of a child by a couple requires the application to be made by ‘a man and a woman’.  Western Australia, the ACT, New South Wales and Tasmania already permit adoption by same-sex couples.

The Government has stressed that the decision to permit adoption by same-sex couples has already been determined and that the review is to simply focus on the technical legislative amendments required to existing adoption laws in order to permit this to occur.

Barrister Eamonn Moran QC has been appointed to conduct the review and community submissions have been called for.  The deadline for submissions is 23 March 2015 and the review is scheduled to be completed by 8 May 2015.
