The Role

We are looking for a mid-level Franchising Lawyer to join our successful Corporate Advisory and Franchising team. Our lawyers have worked with hundreds of franchisors, both Australian and international, to help establish and grow their franchise networks.  They have also assisted and advised hundreds of franchisees in one of the biggest decisions in life – buying a business.

Our franchising team handles a diverse range of work, including establishing franchise networks, advising and setting up processes to ensure ongoing compliance with the Franchising Code of Conduct, managing franchise grants, sales and renewals, advising on expansion strategies, franchise buybacks, sales and restructures, and assisting with franchise-related disputes. We also support franchise and other clients with intellectual property licensing and protection, leasing, and their broader commercial legal needs — so our commercial lawyers get genuine variety alongside franchising legal work.

The successful candidate will assist new franchise systems with their set-up, keep existing franchise clients safe by maintaining compliant documents and processes and take on a diverse range of interesting commercial work from our franchisor and other clients.

This is a hands-on role with real client contact and genuine responsibility from the outset working directly alongside Principals who are recognised specialists in the field.

The Ideal Candidate

• 2–4 years’ post-admission experience from a reputable law firm or busy in-house team.
• Strong general commercial law experience, with some demonstrated franchising experience.
• Broad commercial and consumer law experience.
• A desire to work closely with clients.
• Commercial acumen.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Strong drafting skills (franchising, commercial and business law documents, as well as content for the firm’s publications and website).
• A genuine interest in getting involved in broader business development.

A current Victorian practising certificate (or eligibility to hold one) is required. Prior franchise law experience is highly regarded, but we will support the right candidate to develop specialist expertise.
